Wafangdian Grapes are produced in Wafangdian City, Dalian. The protected geographical indication area spans from: east to Maoshan Village, Wanjieling Town, Wafangdian; west to Dawei Village, Tuoshan Township, Wafangdian; south to Shashan Village, Xietun Town, Wafangdian; and north to Kuangdongshan Village, Liguan Town, Wafangdian. The geographical coordinates are: 39°20′N to 40°07′N, 121°13′E to 122°16′E. In 2013, it was registered as a Geographical Indication for Agricultural Products by the Ministry of Agriculture, with the certificate held by the Mengtian Agricultural Federation of Wafangdian City. Wafangdian City is located in the central-western part of the Liaodong Peninsula. It enjoys mild winters, cool summers, and distinct seasons, with an average temperature of 8.3–10.3°C, a frost-free period of 165–185 days, and an average annual precipitation of 540–759 mm. The unique geographical conditions have created distinctive fruit quality in the region, making it a well-known “fruit town.” Historical records such as the “Fuxian County Annals” and the “Wafangdian City Annals” indicate that after the Later Jin army captured Fuzhou Wei in the sixth year of the Tianming era (1621), its generals sent various fresh and rare fruits to Nurhaci in Liaoyang, demonstrating the abundance of fruit in Fuzhou at the time. In the 12th year of the Republic of China, Sun Tianfa, a farmer from Fuxian County, was awarded a second-class medal by the Fengtian Provincial Government for planting over 20,000 fruit trees, including grapes. This marked the first historically recorded large-scale grape cultivation in Wafangdian. Wafangdian Grapes are renowned for their bright color, thin skin, tender flesh, sweet and refreshing taste, fragrant aroma, and rich nutrition. The grapes have a sugar content of over 20%. Testing by the Agricultural Product Safety and Environmental Quality Testing Center of the Shenyang Ecological Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences showed that their nutritional indicators—including protein, carbohydrates, calcium, iron, zinc, vitamin C, and vitamin E—are all higher than those of similar products. With government support and guidance, grape production has evolved from a supporting role to a leading one. As the market value of grapes continues to rise, the grape industry has expanded across various towns and become a major source of income for most fruit farmers. The Kyoho grapes from Xutun Town and Laohutun Town in Wafangdian City have successfully entered the international fruit market, while the Red Globe grapes from Tucheng Township are also exported to the Russian market, achieving strong economic returns and a good reputation both domestically and abroad.
