Liaoxi Autumn White Pears
Liaoning Province is one of China’s three major white pear production regions. The Autumn White Pear is one of the oldest pear varieties in northern China. Due to its preference for fertile water and suitability for growing in sandy loam soil on sunny slopes, the Autumn White Pear has made its home in the farmsteads of Liaoxi’s mountainous areas. The fruit is oblong or oval-shaped, averaging 150 grams in weight, with the largest single fruit weighing up to 183 grams. The fruit is large yet has a very small core, with golden-yellow skin, tender flesh, and a deliciously sweet taste. It can be eaten fresh or processed into dried fruits, preserved fruits, canned goods, fruit wine, and jam. The Autumn White Pear is also highly valued for its excellent storage qualities—when stored, its color becomes even more vibrant and it develops a fragrant aroma, typically remaining good for consumption well beyond the Start of Summer in the following lunar year.
