Huludao Autumn Plums
As early as 1924, Xing Laowei, a fruit farmer from Zhangxianggongtun in Lianshan District, Huludao City, introduced autumn plums from the Xiongyuecheng area of Gaixian County. He successfully grafted the scions onto local wild apricot rootstocks and the trial planting proved successful. The trees bore fruit early, produced delicious-tasting plums, and yielded high quantities—prompting extensive cultivation around the Greater and Lesser Hongluo Mountains. In 1983, the variety was approved for promotion by the Liaoning Provincial Crop Variety Approval Committee.
Huludao Autumn Plums are medium-sized, nearly round, with an average weight of 30 grams per fruit and up to 75 grams at maximum. When fully ripe, they turn a purplish-red hue and are coated with a white bloom. The skin is thin and glossy, resembling purple agate. The flesh is orange-yellow, fine-textured, juicy, with very little fiber and an intense aroma. The pit is notably small. The plums ripen in late August and flood the market in September, quickly becoming a sought-after item in the fruit market. Huludao Autumn Plums are excellent for fresh eating, and the canned and dried products made from them are also highly favored by consumers.
