Frozen Qiuzi Pears
As the old year gives way to the new, perhaps the most beloved fruit in China’s northeastern region is the frozen Qiuzi pear. Broadly speaking, Qiuzi pears refer to a general category that includes Lannanxing pears, Xiangshui pears, Huagai pears, Jianba pears, and Jingbai pears, but the frozen pears commonly found in northeastern markets are mainly made from Huagai pears and An pears. The Qiuzi pear tree is tall, usually reaching over 10 meters, grows vigorously, and has strong cold resistance. Even temperatures as low as minus 37 degrees Celsius can’t harm it. This type of pear is very hardy and can grow and bear fruit even in thin soil layers or quite arid land. It is often said that frozen Qiuzi pears from Liaoning have become an indispensable New Year essential for people in the northeast—and that is indeed true.
