The forest frog, commonly known as Hasima, Huang1, Oil Toad, or Red-Bellied Field Chicken, is an amphibian with extremely high economic value. The dried oviducts of the female frog are a precious traditional Chinese medicinal material—Hasima Oil, also called Field Chicken Oil or 1 Oil. The forest frog is a renowned nourishing and health-promoting food, a valuable amphibian species used both as food and medicine, known for its notable effects in moistening the lungs and nourishing yin, nourishing kidney and essence, as well as nourishing brain and improving intelligence. Frog oil contains 56.3% protein, 3.5% fat, 4.7% minerals, and 27.5% non-nitrogenous organic matter, along with 18 essential amino acids and various trace elements required by the human body. The frog meat is tender and delicious, with dried frog meat containing 79% protein, making it a delicacy on the dining table.

Located in Xinbin County, nestled among the green mountains and clear waters of eastern Liaoning, a boom in forest frog farming began in the early 1990s. The county government listed it as an advantageous industry and adopted a model of scientific breeding, deep processing, and scaled development. It focused on promoting frog farming among households while also advancing deep processing and market expansion. In 1995, it was honored with the title “Home of Forest Frogs in China.”

Today, the county has built China’s first breeding frog demonstration base. It pioneered the promotion of semi-artificial forest frog farming techniques nationwide and became the first region in China to engage in the deep processing of forest frog farming. The county now has two large-scale breeding frog bases, implementing scientific measures such as semi-artificial farming and female induction mutation, greatly enhancing frog farming efficiency. The number of households with an annual income of over 100,000 yuan has been increasing year by year. Meanwhile, local pharmaceutical factories have collaborated with research institutions to launch a series of products including forest frog oil capsules and oral liquids, premium active frog oil, and refined forest frog meat, which are sold to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, and Southeast Asia, spreading the fame of the “Home of Forest Frogs in China” far and wide.
