Beipiao tomatoes are a geographical indication agricultural product. Beipiao tomatoes, produced in Beipiao City, Chaoyang, Liaoning Province, have a geographical indication protection area covering 29 towns and farms in Beipiao City, including Xiguan Ying Town, and 260 administrative villages. The geographical coordinates are 120°15′–121°18′ east longitude and 41°23′–42°17′ north latitude. In 2012, they were registered as a national geographical indication agricultural product by the Ministry of Agriculture, with the certificate held by the Beipiao Vegetable Station. Beipiao has unique geographical and climatic conditions: it enjoys 2,651–3,220 hours of sunshine annually, with abundant light and large diurnal temperature variations. Brown soil accounts for 85% of the city’s soil area, and the region features high elevation, mostly hilly terrain, low rainfall, and low air humidity—conditions similar to the tomato’s native North American environment, which are favorable for producing high-quality tomatoes. Beipiao tomatoes are well-shaped, with thick fruit skin and flesh, high hardness, bright red color, good taste, and strong storability and transportability. The cultivation of Beipiao tomatoes has a long history, dating back nearly 100 years, making it one of China’s earliest tomato-growing regions. Currently, the cultivation area of Beipiao tomatoes reaches 380,000 mu, accounting for over 70% of the local protected vegetable cultivation area, and has become one of the leading agricultural industries in Beipiao City. In 2011, Beipiao was designated by the Ministry of Agriculture as a national demonstration county for standardized agricultural production. In 2013, Beipiao earned the title of “China’s No. 1 County for Summer Greenhouse Tomatoes,” and in the same year, it was awarded the title of “China’s No. 1 County for Greenhouse Tomato Production” by the China Fruit and Vegetable Experts Committee. Additionally, Beipiao tomatoes are certified as green food and pollution-free agricultural produce. The unique climate and special cultivation methods of Beipiao have made it a nationally renowned “summer greenhouse tomato” production base, earning the reputation: “For high-altitude tomatoes, look to Guangxi; for summer greenhouse tomatoes, look to Beipiao.”
