Bronze Gorge Willow Weaving
Bronze Gorge willow weaving is a traditional handicraft with a long history. Known for its clean white color, flexibility, and beauty, it has won the affection of people both in China and abroad, becoming a common handicraft in daily life. The craft of willow weaving in Bronze Gorge has a deep-rooted history. Legend has it that when Emperor Qin Shi Huang sent his eldest son Fu Su and the general Meng Tian to station troops in Ningxia and reclaim farmland along the banks of the Yellow River, they used “grass and soil cofferdams” at Bronze Gorge to block and raise the river’s water level, directing it into the “Qin Canal” for gravity-fed irrigation of fertile fields. During this massive hydraulic engineering project, willow-woven tools were put to use, and from then on, the willow weaving industry began to develop.
Bronze Gorge is located in an irrigation area fed by the Yellow River, with crisscrossing canals and fertile soil, making it suitable for the growth of willow trees. There are many varieties of willows in Bronze Gorge, including river willow, sand willow, hairy willow, weeping willow, and black-bark willow. Every March and April, the riverbanks, canal sides, and areas around homes and houses are covered with lush green willows. Just within the six major trunk canals, four major trunk canals, and the riverbanks of Bronze Gorge City, there are over 30,000 acres of willow forests, providing abundant resources for the willow weaving industry. The willow branches selected for weaving in Bronze Gorge are slender, uniformly thick, free of blemishes, and glossy. They are naturally flexible and, after being treated with steaming water, become very soft and easy to weave. Once dried, they become sturdy and wear-resistant—truly premium raw material for willow weaving.
In the past, willow weaving in Bronze Gorge was carried out by individual households for their own use. The products were rough and came in limited varieties. Today, the scale of willow weaving in Bronze Gorge has expanded. Products have evolved from traditional items such as baskets, winnowing fans, back carriers, grain baskets, vegetable baskets, chopstick holders, and strainers to include dozens of modern varieties such as laundry baskets, fruit baskets, bread trays, wine carriers, fish traps, mail hangers, and flower baskets. Bronze Gorge willow weaving is characterized by simple craftsmanship, solid construction, careful selection of materials, diverse designs, and practicality for daily use, making it highly popular in both domestic and international markets.
Since 1979, willow weaving in Bronze Gorge has developed rapidly with good economic returns. Its products are mainly exported to 14 countries and regions, including the United States, Japan, France, the United Kingdom, and Germany. It enjoys especially high popularity in Japan, where Japanese trading companies, as well as businesspeople from Madagascar and Hong Kong, have visited Bronze Gorge City for factory tours and orders. To support the development of the willow weaving industry and promote it as a flagship product for greater global market exposure, Bronze Gorge City has established a dedicated foreign trade company specializing in the export of willow woven goods. The company also provides training for skilled weavers and comprehensive services related to willow weaving production.
The growth of the willow weaving industry has also improved people’s livelihoods, enabling some to achieve prosperity. Farmers happily say, “In the past, we burned willow twigs for fuel; today, they’ve become priceless treasures. The returns are fast, the profits are high, and every village and household can take part.”
