Originally known as "Pinaiguo" (also locally called "Ya Mianbao," "Suanba Pear," or "Pitai Fruit"), it is a local cultivated variety of the Xinjiang pear group within the apple subfamily of the Rosaceae family, found at the upper limit of pear species distribution. It features robust tree vigor, long lifespan, low soil requirements, preference for shade and moisture, cold resistance, pest and disease resistance, and strong adaptability. The fruit has a sweet and sour taste, a warm nature, and contains various amino acids, sugars, vitamins, as well as trace elements such as potassium, calcium, and iron. It is a high-quality green food. Beer fruit offers multiple health benefits, including nourishing the stomach, moistening the lungs, quenching thirst, relieving coughs, and softening blood vessels. Currently, it is extensively cultivated in Hezheng County, Linxia City, Gansu Province. The fruit resembles a pear, more specifically a frozen pear.

Beer fruit is a unique mountain delicacy growing in the mountainous regions of Hezheng County, Gansu Province, at altitudes of 2,200–2,400 meters. The trees are long-lived, have a long fruit-bearing period, and yield abundant harvests. According to records, the oldest trees can reach up to 180 years, with individual trees producing up to approximately 1,800 kilograms. It is a uniquely Chinese mountain delicacy fruit.

To date, the cultivation area of beer fruit in the county has reached 97,000 mu, with 32,000 mu currently bearing fruit, producing an annual output of 6,280 tons and a fruit product value of 3.156 million yuan. There are six beer fruit processing enterprises, which have processed a cumulative total of over 3,000 tons of fruit. Four spontaneous origin trading markets have been established, with an annual trading volume of 2,000 tons. Fifteen fresh fruit and juice storage facilities have been built. The processing capacity of leading enterprises is gradually improving, and the industrial chain of "planting, sales, and processing" is taking shape. Meanwhile, the popularity and influence of premium product brands such as "Hezheng Beer Fruit," "Songmingyan Brand," "Nanyang Brand," and "Meteorite Brand" continue to grow both within and outside the province. At the Second Gansu Forestry, Fruit, and Flower Expo, "Hezheng Beer Fruit" was awarded the title of "Top Ten Fruits of Gansu." The series of beer fruit beverages produced by Babai Beer Fruit Co., Ltd. won the "Gold Award" in the processing category. In December 2009, the Hezheng County Beer Fruit Association successfully registered the "Hezheng Beer Fruit" geographical indication certification trademark, effectively enhancing the added value of the fruit and strengthening its market competitiveness.
