Xi’an Jade Carving

As early as five to six thousand years ago during the Neolithic Age, tools and ornaments made of jade appeared in the Xi’an area. The openwork jade running horse unearthed from the Weiling Mausoleum of Emperor Yuan of Han was carved from high-quality white jade, achieving a high level of artistry and craftsmanship. Artifacts such as Han dynasty jade seals, Tang dynasty agate ox horn cups, and gold-inlaid jade bracelets unearthed in Xi’an all demonstrate the exceptional skill of Xi’an’s jade carving tradition. Xi’an jade carving products are made from premium materials such as Lantian jade and Shenmu agate, and fall into five main categories: figures, flowers, birds and beasts, incense burners and vases, and decorative items. These products feature exquisite designs, delicate craftsmanship, and a lustrous shine. Particularly popular among both domestic and international tourists are pieces embodying the grandeur of the Han and Tang dynasties—such as heavenly kings, bodhisattvas, and lions—as well as locally distinctive items like bracelets, jade bowls, and wine sets.
