Fuxian County in northern Shaanxi (formerly known as Fuzhou) has long been reputed as “a land where all kinds of grains thrive, even when other regions fail,” and was once the site of the Zhiluo Campaign; the Hulu River Valley town of Zhiluo is known as the “Little Jiangnan of the Frontier” and the “Little Central Shaanxi Plain of Northern Shaanxi.”

Zhiluo Tribute Rice is produced in the river valley of Zhiluo Town, which is known as the “Little Jiangnan of the Frontier” and the “Land of Fish and Rice.” The valley benefits from high-quality water, abundant sunlight, large diurnal temperature variations, and a long rice-growing season—ideal conditions for cultivating rice. The resulting rice is rich in oil, has a mellow taste, and enjoys widespread acclaim. The renowned “Zhiluo Tribute Rice” comes from this fertile land. During the Sui and Tang dynasties, it was presented as tribute to the imperial court and served in the royal palace cuisine, hence the name “Zhiluo Tribute Rice.” Legend has it that the small, round, crystal-clear rice grown here once miraculously restored an emperor’s health, giving the rice its name. This “tribute rice” is transplanted in spring and harvested only in autumn. Due to its long growth period, it is rich in nutrients and has a unique flavor. In early summer, while terraced rice fields are typically seen only in southern water towns, the vast fields of Zhiluo showcase shimmering paddies and vibrant green seedlings. As the saying goes, “Even the plateau of northern Shaanxi produces rice,” referring to the Zhiluo Tribute Rice.
