Huangling Flower Bread, commonly known as flower steamed buns, is a traditional folk ceremonial bread popular in the rural areas of Huangling. It is renowned for its exquisite craftsmanship and unique designs. Huangling Flower Bread holds strong representative significance in the local folk culture, serving as a means to pass down and promote the fine traditional virtues of the Chinese nation, such as gratitude and respect for the elderly and love for children. Every year during the Qingming Festival, many people from all over the country come to the Mausoleum of the Yellow Emperor to pay tribute to their ancestors, and Huangling Flower Bread is an indispensable part of the ceremony. As offerings to the Yellow Emperor and ancestors, the flower breads must be intricately structured, vividly shaped, and possess high aesthetic and ornamental value. The ceremonial flower breads often feature flowers, birds, fish, insects, and various animals—some majestic, others elegant—each exquisitely crafted and lifelike. During this time, local artisans showcase their exceptional skills.

At the home of Wang Minzheng, an inheritor of the national intangible cultural heritage—Huangling Flower Bread—we witnessed the entire process of crafting the highest-standard ceremonial flower buns. The 73-year-old heritage bearer Wang Minzheng and his 71-year-old wife Tian Fenqin demonstrated such skillful and nimble techniques that we were left dazzled and deeply impressed. With just a pinch of dough, they kneaded, rolled, and shaped it, then used tools such as scissors, tweezers, combs, spoons, box lids, and small knives to press, pull, coil, pinch, cut, slice, and pierce—to create a variety of vivid, delightful creatures. These were then steamed in a pot for forty minutes. All their reverence for the Yellow Emperor and ancestors, as well as prayers and wishes for a bright future, were infused into these flower buns.

Wang’s dedication to Huangling Flower Bread stems from his deep affection for Huangling culture. He told us that Huangling Flower Bread has a history of a thousand years in the region, and the auspicious animals and colorful flowers in the breads reflect rich imagination, symbolizing wealth and good fortune. He began learning to make Huangling Flower Bread at the age of twenty and has been creating them for forty years, producing countless pieces during that time. His materials are simple—just ordinary dough with edible food coloring. The coloring plays a powerful role, not only extending the "lifespan" of the flower breads but also making them more vibrantly colored. He hopes that more people will come to appreciate and understand Huangling Flower Bread, ensuring this art form is better preserved, spreads beyond Huangling, gains national recognition, and earns worldwide acclaim.
