Yichuan Apples
First developed in 1984, Yichuan apples are mainly produced in towns such as Danzhou, Qiulin, Niujiadian, Jiaoli, Yunyan, Xinshihexi, and Gelou. Across the county, 19,779 households are engaged in apple production, accounting for over 80% of all households. In recent years, with the widespread application of four key technologies, the quality, profitability, and reputation of Yichuan apples have continued to improve. By the end of 2004, the total planted area had reached 200,700 mu, including 148,513 mu of Fuji apples, 31,577 mu of Qinguan, 3,466.9 mu of Gala, and 3,926.8 mu of Red Star. The total bearing area was 80,000 mu. A 50,000-mu green base has been certified by the China Green Food Development Center. In 2004, the total apple yield was 72,431 tons, with an output value of 75.6 million yuan, and per capita apple income for farmers exceeded 700 yuan. Thanks to Yichuan’s location in one of the world’s best apple-growing regions—with abundant sunlight, large diurnal temperature variations, and high altitude—the apples are large, brightly colored, crisp, flavorful, pollution-free, and have a long shelf life. At provincial and municipal fruit quality competitions, 14 varieties have won awards 38 times, including the Fuji variety, which received the Golden Ji Statue Award at the Second China Yangling Agricultural High-Tech Fair and the Provincial Quality Fruit Award in 2001. In 1997, Yichuan was listed as one of 27 key apple base counties in Shaanxi Province.
