Gaoya Walnuts
Gaoya walnuts are a specialty of Gaoya Town, Qianyang County, Baoji City, Shaanxi Province. The walnuts produced in Gaoya Town feature thin shells, white kernels, thick meat, and a sweet aftertaste, earning unanimous praise from merchants who come through the area.
Though located in a remote area with rugged mountains, deep valleys, and harsh climate, the region is quite suitable for walnut cultivation. To turn the once unappreciated “green eggs” into “golden eggs” that enrich local farmers, the town’s Party committee has leveraged market demand to transform resource advantages into industrial strengths, achieving a win-win in both ecological and economic benefits. Adhering to an “industrial ecologization” approach, the committee began large-scale walnut planting in 2005, incorporating walnut industry development into its industrial planning. The committee has increased investment, introduced incentive policies, and vigorously supported the walnut industry. After several years of effort, the walnut-growing area in Gaoya Town has reached 26,000 mu, with five high-quality new variety walnut demonstration gardens established, 2,000 mu planted with new varieties, and 3,000 mu of low-yield, low-efficiency orchards upgraded. Additionally, three walnut drying bases have been set up and three sets of walnut drying equipment have been introduced.
