Beichuan Beige Marble is a protected geographical indication product.

“Beichuan Beige Marble,” a famous stone product from Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County, Mianyang City, Sichuan Province, is a national geographical indication product of China. The name was established through consensus among the China Stone Materials Association, relevant experts and scholars, as well as numerous manufacturers and clients. It is characterized by a wide variety of types, bright colors, clean slab surfaces, and superior quality. Apart from natural fissures and patterns, it contains almost no impurities; it also has excellent physicochemical properties. Its physical performance indicators such as bulk density, water absorption rate, polished surface brightness, compressive strength, and flexural strength are significantly better than those of other similar products. It is considered the best beige marble discovered in China, and in terms of resource reserves, mining conditions, and extraction volume, it is the only variety capable of replacing high-quality imported beige stones. By the end of 2010, the China Stone Materials Association awarded Beichuan County the title “Hometown of China’s Beige Marble.”

The main varieties of Beichuan Beige Marble include: Prince Beige, Golden Stone Beige, Daya Beige, Rumai Beige, Qiangjiang Beige, Yellow Wood Grain, Gray Vein, among others. Among these, Golden Stone Beige (Jinshida Beige), Daya Beige, and Rumai Beige have been rated as “National Famous, High-quality, and Special Stones” by the China Stone Materials Association and the National Stone Quality Supervision, Inspection and Testing Center, making them representative varieties of high-end marble in the region.

  Regional Characteristics

The Beichuan Beige Marble mining area is located in the foothills of the Longmen Mountain range on the northwestern edge of the Sichuan Basin, belonging to a low-to-medium elevation mountainous terrain with shallow to medium dissection. Elevations range from 400 meters to 1,450 meters. The mining area features a subtropical monsoon climate with distinct seasons, mild and moist weather, abundant rainfall, ample sunshine, and a frost-free period of 211 days per year. The highest temperature reaches 34.5°C, the lowest -3°C, with an average annual temperature of 15.74°C, and average annual rainfall of 1,300 mm, concentrated mainly during the rainy season from June to September. The area remains suitable for field geological and mining operations throughout the year.

The Beichuan Beige Marble mining area lies geotectonically at the northwestern margin of the Yangtze Landmass, at the junction between the Longmen Mountain foreland thrust–nappe zone (bounded by the “Jiangyou Fault”) and the northwestern Sichuan foreland basin of the Sichuan Land Basin. In terms of stratigraphic zoning, it belongs to the northern section of the Longmen Mountain subzone within the Yangtze Stratigraphic Region. Crustal movements in this region, ranging from the Zhongtiao Cycle of the pre-Sinian System to the Himalayan Cycle after the Tertiary System, are all reflected to varying degrees. Influenced by the late Indosinian Movement, all strata from the Triassic and earlier were folded, forming the fold structure of the Longmen Mountain thrust–nappe zone. The Yanshan Movement in the Sichuan Basin mainly manifested as frequent oscillatory uplifts and subsidences, developing molasse formations in the mountain-front depression zone. The overall uplift during the late Yanshan Movement led to the absence of Cretaceous and Tertiary strata. During the early stage of the Himalayan Movement, due to strong horizontal compressive forces, the Mesozoic cover layers were folded and fractured, further developing and stabilizing the Longmen Mountain thrust–nappe zone. Except for the absence of Tertiary and Cretaceous strata, the mining area exposes strata from the Quaternary to the Zhaowu System. Particularly in areas centered around Tongkou, Xiangquan, and Yong’an, the shallow marine carbonate sedimentation from the Devonian to the Triassic is highly developed, forming a super-thick layer of limestone, dolomitic limestone, and dolomite from the Middle Triassic Tianjingshan and Lekoupo formations, with thicknesses of 500–700 meters. These strata underwent metamorphic processes such as thermal effects and intense compression due to the intrusion of magmatic rocks, resulting in a marble deposit with unique characteristics unlike other marbles.

  Product Features

The Beichuan Beige marble mines feature centralized reserves, large storage volumes, thick mineral layers, and superior quality, meeting the needs of modern stone industry operations that use large-scale equipment for raw block extraction. After detailed classification, Beichuan Beige varieties can be matched with mainstream imported stones. Moreover, its quality and color have been recognized by experts as the best beige marble found in China, and in terms of resource reserves, mining conditions, and extraction volume, it is the only variety capable of replacing high-quality imported beige stones.

The features of Beichuan Beige Marble can be summarized as large reserves, comprehensive varieties, superior quality, bright colors, and clean slab surfaces. The large reserves are demonstrated by nearly 100,000 cubic meters of geological reserves within a nearly 50-square-kilometer area centered on Beichuan, with an extractable range of 10 square kilometers and extractable volume exceeding 100 million cubic meters. The wide variety is due to the formation of ultra-thick limestone and dolomitic limestone layers through geological processes, with individual layers typically ranging from 2 to 6.5 meters in thickness, forming multi-layered structures where color and patterns vary by layer—resulting in many varieties ranging from Sarah Beige to Amman Beige, then to Old Beige and even Light Faux Carrara. The superior quality is reflected in its excellent physicochemical properties: its bulk density is very high for marble, close to 2.8 grams per cubic centimeter, with water absorption being only about one-third that of ordinary marble, and a lightness generally above 90 degrees. The brightness and cleanliness of the slab surfaces are even more prominent, with almost no impurities apart from natural fissures and patterns.

  Historical Background

The name “Beichuan Beige Marble” originates from the dominant color palette of marble found within Beichuan, ranging from Sarah Beige to Amman Beige, and from Old Beige to Light Faux Carrara. The name was established through consensus among the China Stone Materials Association and relevant experts and scholars. In May 2005, with strong support from the People’s Government of Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County—especially then Deputy County Head Jing Dazhong, who actively promoted the initiative—the first Beige Marble development enterprise in Beichuan, Beichuan ZiYang Mining Development Co., Ltd., was established, officially kicking off the development of Beichuan Beige Marble. In November of the same year, Jing Dazhong became the County Governor of Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County, and the stone industry was designated as one of the four pillar industries for key development in the county’s 11th Five-Year Plan. The county’s Party Committee and government specifically established the Xiangjiangwan Stone Industry Development Leading Group, headed by senior officials with standing committee members overseeing daily operations. More than ten functional departments including land and resources and investment promotion were directly involved, and the county government hired relevant experts as advisors to the stone industry to vigorously promote Beichuan Beige Marble. Gradually, the products gained market traction, appearing at various scales of professional exhibitions across China and attracting the attention of producers and distributors from major beige marble origins such as Italy, Spain, and Turkey. Within the stone industry, it is commonly referred to as “Beichuan Beige” or “China Beige.”

  Production Situation

In 2010, Beichuan had ten “beige marble” mine development enterprises, with mining areas controlled within five square kilometers, and three non-mine processing enterprises, with a total investment of nearly 200 million yuan. Of this, about 20 million yuan was invested in infrastructure construction, accounting for 10% of the total investment; approximately 20 million yuan was used for preliminary work such as mine transfers and compensations, also 10%; less than 40 million yuan went into processing plant construction, most of which was used for land acquisition, making up 20% of the total investment. This excludes mines and processing enterprises producing calcium powder and cement raw materials. Among the mine development enterprises, three had achieved raw block production capacity with a total of six mining faces, the largest of which had a mining platform covering 11,000 square meters. It is expected that the mine area can achieve a raw block extraction capacity of 2,000 cubic meters per month. There are ten finalized varieties. The mining area owns nearly forty sets of large stone machinery and equipment, including thirty-one large excavators and loaders, six cutting machines, nearly ten stationary and mobile lifting devices, and over thirty diamond wire saws. Two large slab automatic production lines have been built, and thin slab and mosaic production have begun to take shape. To rapidly scale up Beichuan Beige mining and stone processing, the government specifically planned and constructed the Xiangjianggang Stone Industry Park in Xiangquan Township, known as the “Dragon Ridge,” with a total planned area of 20 km² and an initial development area of 5.5 km². All projects in the stone industrial park follow unified planning and layout, ensuring environmental protection while promoting synchronized development among stone mining enterprises, processing enterprises, and artificial stone and calcium powder enterprises that specialize in recycling stone processing waste.
