Quanzhou Purple-skin Garlic
Purple-skin garlic, a local specialty of Quanzhou in Guangxi. Introduced from Tenghai purple-skin garlic in Yunnan as the seed stock, it has developed unique qualities and superior quality due to the region’s distinctive geographical environment. With excellent medicinal value, it has become a unique local product of Quanzhou County.
Quality Characteristics
The purple-skin garlic from Quanzhou County has a purplish-red skin, large and plump cloves, and a strong pungent flavor. Its outer skin is loose while the inner clove wrappers are tight. The bulb's skin is purple and easy to peel, mostly consisting of four to six cloves that are clean, glossy, large, and firm in texture. It is especially prized for its spicy and fragrant taste. Its uniqueness lies in its ability to retain flavor over time without fading, maintaining color even when stored for long periods. When mashed into garlic paste, its color and taste remain unchanged even after three days. People say: “The purple-skin garlic from Jiantang, every bulb is four to six cloves—won’t break under wheels or feet, keeps its color over time, spreads fragrance everywhere, serves both as seasoning and medicine—truly ‘priceless gold.’”

Coupled with the bulbs being large, high-quality, and flavorful, they have gained favor among a wide range of consumers. Garlic buyers from surrounding counties and cities wait eagerly by the fields to purchase fresh produce. Garlic farmers joyfully harvest their crops in the fields. Based on this year’s market prices, one mu of land can yield an income of 4,000–5,000 yuan. Purple-skin garlic has now become the golden key for the people of Jiantang Township to achieve prosperity.
