Xiangshui Town in Longzhou County, Guangxi actively guides local farmers to develop Green Bamboo Fish farming, creating new channels for income growth. Cage farming of Green Bamboo Fish in Xiangshui Town is mainly concentrated in Xiangshui Village along the Zuojiang River and Gaofeng Village along the Heishui River. The fish, raised using scientific methods, are flavorful and popular among diners. It is estimated that these two villages will produce over 50,000 kilograms of market-ready fish this year, with output value exceeding one million yuan. To protect the interests of farmers, the town’s Party Committee and government have partnered with a businessman from Nanning, Mr. Liang, who purchases the fish at a unified price of 20 yuan per kilogram. Farmers can now sell their fish locally at good prices.

The Green Bamboo Fish belongs to the class Actinopterygii, order Cypriniformes, and family Cyprinidae. It is one of the valuable economic fish species in the Pearl River system. As an omnivorous and flat-feeding fish, it has a clear green body color and prefers duckweed, vegetables, and tender leaves. The flesh of the Green Bamboo Fish is delicate, delicious, and nutritious. The fish has a slender, silvery-white body with a relatively long and pointed snout compared to common grass carp, as well as small, round, and delicate eyes.

Originally from the China-Vietnam border river, the Green Bamboo Fish—commonly known as Spined Loach—is valued for its diverse diet, strong disease resistance, high farming efficiency, and delicious, tender, and smooth-textured flesh, making it an ideal ingredient for sashimi or braised fish. It is abundantly produced in the Shuikou River section of Longzhou County. The fish often inhabits rivers or mountain streams with fast-flowing water.

The Green Bamboo Fish is one of China’s major economic fish species. Its tender, sweet meat is nutritious and comes from unpolluted, clean waters, making it a truly green product. Typically farmed in cages, the fish is very popular, and its bile even has medicinal value. However, due to years of pollution from electro-fishing, blast fishing, poisoning, and industrial waste, the Green Bamboo Fish was nearly driven to extinction. With the success of cage farming, cage-raised fry in Longzhou County now rely entirely on wild-caught parent fish.

The Green Bamboo Fish is valued for its diverse diet, strong disease resistance, high farming efficiency, and delicious, tender, and smooth-textured flesh, making it an excellent choice for preparing sashimi or braised fish. It is highly favored by fish farmers, with high market value for commercial fish. In 2002, it was awarded the title of “Famous Agricultural Product of Nanning Region.” With significant economic value and market potential, it is currently in high demand and short supply—a rare and delicious delicacy. Due to difficulties in sourcing fry, limited supply and high prices, coupled with strong market demand, it has broad prospects.
