Baguai Red Tangerine
Baguai Red Tangerine
Breeding Institutions: Guangxi University, Comprehensive Experimental Station of National Citrus Industry Technology System in Central-Southern Guangxi
Variety Source: Derived from a bud mutation of Hongjiang Orange.
Characteristics: The tree canopy is round-shaped with smooth trunks. Branches are round, smooth, and dark green, occasionally bearing short small thorns in the leaf axils of twigs. Leaves are long-oval, tapering to a point, with a distinct notch, blunt serrated leaf margins, wedge-shaped leaf base, and linear wing leaves arranged alternately. Leaf length is 6.17 cm, width 3.34 cm, with medium thickness. Veins are moderately visible. Petiole is 1.15 cm long; wing petiole is small, 0.65 cm long and 0.19 cm wide. Leaf color is deep green. Flowers are small, with a diameter of 2.7 cm, 5 petals, free stamens (18–20), and pistil at the same height as stamens. Fruits are flat-round, with vertical diameter of 4.64–5.13 cm, horizontal diameter of 5.87–6.61 cm, fruit shape index of 0.79–0.8, orange-red peel, slightly indented fruit apex, neck-like fruit base, and prominent radiating grooves around the stem. Peel thickness is 0.22 cm, with 11.53 seeds per fruit, soft texture, edible rate of 74.08%, and soluble solids content of 14.73%.
Yield Performance: From 2006 to 2011, three generations of high-grafting trials of “Baguai Red Tangerine” were conducted in Longzhou County, Guangxi. In January 2012, experts organized by the Crop Variety Approval Office of the Autonomous Region conducted on-site evaluations in Longzhou County, Chongzuo City. For the first generation, average single fruit weight was 103.6 g, average yield per plant was 22.0 kg, and yield per mu was 2,420 kg; for the second generation, average single fruit weight was 107.9 g, average yield per plant was 23.5 kg, and yield per mu was 2,585 kg; for the third generation, average single fruit weight was 99.4 g, average yield per plant was 25.0 kg, and yield per mu was 2,750 kg.
Cultivation Key Points: 1. Orchard establishment: Select gentle slopes or hilly land that are convenient for transportation and irrigation. Plant spacing is 2 m × 4 m. 2. Fertilization and water management: For young trees, apply fertilizer frequently but lightly. Apply quick-acting fertilizer 20 days before shoot growth in spring, summer, and autumn, 15 kg of 0.4% compound fertilizer or 5% well-fermented bran liquid fertilizer per plant, and apply 50 kg of well-fermented organic base fertilizer per plant in winter. For bearing trees, apply a bud sprouting and flower-promoting fertilizer before spring bud break, 0.5 kg of compound fertilizer + 15 kg of organic fertilizer per plant. Spray 2% boron fertilizer + 3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate foliar fertilizer when flowers show white. During the first and second physiological fruit drop periods and fruit enlargement stage, apply quick-acting fertilizer mainly as foliar feed. After fruit harvest, apply a heavy fertilizer mainly composed of organic fertilizer, 25–30 kg per plant. Add foliar fertilizer with every pesticide application. 3. Pruning aims for good ventilation: retain strong branches, remove weak ones; keep sparse, remove dense; eliminate crossing branches, and remove diseased, insect-infested, dead, and ineffective branches. 4. Pest and disease control: perform winter orchard sanitation, and apply pesticides in spring, summer, and autumn, focusing on controlling important diseases and pests such as citrus Huanglongbing, canker, scab, citrus psyllid, red spider mite, rust mite, scale insects, and leaf miners.
Approval Opinion: Upon review, this variety meets the general crop variety approval criteria and is approved for cultivation throughout the region.
