Luzhai County is a high-quality citrus production base with abundant citrus fruits. As early as the 1950s and 1960s, Luzhai Shanglong Orange was a high-quality variety promoted for cultivation throughout the region. From the 1990s to 2008 over the span of more than 10 years, researchers selected and cultivated the high-quality Luzhai Honey Orange variety from traditional orange cultivars. Its quality characteristics are mainly reflected in its well-shaped fruit, oval or round, neat in appearance, generally weighing around 150 grams each, classifying it as a medium-sized variety. The color appears orange-red or orange-yellow, bright and vivid, with a clean fruit surface, smooth peel, and fine oil glands. The flesh is crisp, sweet in taste, with a unique honey-like fragrance, and is either seedless or has very few seeds (no more than 3 seeds per fruit), a high edible rate (≥75%), and soluble solids ≥12%, reaching up to over 16%. Total acid content is ≤0.8%. It is currently mainly consumed fresh but can also be used as raw material for juice processing. The fruit has relatively good storage capabilities. Under normal temperature conditions and without any chemical treatment, when individually bagged, the fruit shows no significant decline in quality after 60 days of storage. Through long-term production practice, a set of high-yield cultivation techniques has been developed. Under the climatic and environmental conditions of Luzhai, the product exhibits excellent quality. It won first prize in the Liuzhou High-Quality Fruit Competition, enjoys good market demand, and is highly favored by consumers. It was one of the main fruit varieties promoted for cultivation in Luzhai County during the 12th Five-Year Plan period.
The production area of Luzhai Honey Orange covers the entire current administrative region of Luzhai County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
