Rongshui Black Xiang Pig
1. Growing Environment
The Rongshui Black Xiang Pig is raised in mountainous production areas with fresh air and abundant mountain spring water. It is managed in a pollution-free environment and adapts well to the local extensive farming conditions. Its diet mainly consists of coarse feed such as sweet potato vines, taro leaves, plantain tubers, vegetables, and wild green forage.
2. Morphological and Quality Characteristics
The Rongshui Black Xiang Pig is a rare miniature local pig breed. It features a small body size, tender meat with a delicious aroma, genetically pure traits, and unpolluted meat quality. Both suckling pigs and two-month-old weaned piglets have no milky or other unpleasant odors. Their skin is thin and soft, the meat is fragrant, tender, sweet, and lightly aromatic. The muscle fibers are fine, intramuscular fat is evenly distributed, and they are rich in unsaturated fatty acids, giving them the excellent characteristic of being ready for slaughter at an early age. They are premium ingredients for making roast suckling pigs and cured whole pigs. The meat is not greasy and also benefits skin beauty.
3. Distribution and Scale
They are mainly concentrated in towns such as Gandong Township, Gunbei Township, Sanfang Town, and Wangdong Township, but can also be found in the other thirteen mountainous townships. In 2013, the annual slaughter reached 160,000 pigs. Major breeding enterprises include the Shanjing Company’s Forest Eco-Free-Range Breeding Base, Rongshui County Animal Husbandry Co., Ltd., Rongshui Jingangshan Black Xiang Pig Forest Free-Range Breeding Professional Cooperative, and Rongshui County Tonglian Township Hongyuan Xiang Pig Breeding Cooperative.
