Radishes have the effect of clearing phlegm and regulating qi. They are sweet in taste and inexpensive, making them very popular among the Hakka people. Radish cake, made with radish slices and sticky rice flour, is the Hakka version of New Year cake. Depending on personal preference, it can be enhanced with five-spice powder, shrimp, mushrooms, pork, and other ingredients that complement the fresh aroma of radish. A splash of two bowls of aged wine makes it an essential treat for the people of Xingning during the New Year.
