Fengshun Sweet Corn
Sweet corn is divided into supersweet corn and regular sweet corn. Sweet corn has a sweet taste and high sugar content, with sugar levels in the kernels reaching 12–18% during the milk stage. After drying, the kernels shrivel and are often yellow in color. Rich in starch, sugar, protein, vitamins, and other nutrients, sweet corn is highly nutritious, deliciously sweet, and tasty. It is generally consumed as tender ears or processed into canned products. In recent years, fresh sweet corn cobs have been sold at high market prices, delivering good economic returns, and have become increasingly popular. Since 1998, the county has planted 2,000 to 5,000 mu of sweet corn annually. Especially since 2000, local agricultural authorities have introduced companies from Guangzhou, Fengshun, and other areas to develop 500 to 2,000 mu of “contract” sweet corn production each year in areas such as Hedong, Daidu, Mianyang, and Pingnan. Following pollution-free standardized production management, the yield reaches 650 to 1,000 kilograms of fresh cobs per mu, achieving favorable economic and social benefits. In 2005, the county applied for and obtained pollution-free agricultural product certification at the provincial level.
