As early as the Eastern Han Dynasty and the Three Kingdoms period, walnuts were introduced from Asia Minor and began to be planted in large areas. Walnut kernels are a delicious food rich in protein and fat, and they can also be pressed for oil. The oil content of walnut kernels is generally around 70%, and can be as high as 80%, earning them the title “king of oilseeds.” Changzhi walnuts are mainly distributed in Pingshun and Licheng counties. Pingshun has a long tradition of growing walnuts, with walnut trees spread throughout the county, especially abundant in towns such as Dongshitou, Hongtiguan, Xigou, and Longzhen, as well as along both banks of the Zhuozhang River. Its walnut-related products are an important export commodity of the county. In Licheng, dried fruits are dominated by walnuts and Chinese prickly ash, with walnuts being the most produced.
