Recently, news came from the Trademark Office of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce that “Huguan Codonopsis” from Huguan County in our province has passed the preliminary review for its certification mark of origin.

The traditional Chinese medicinal herb codonopsis, which has been cultivated in Huguan County for a thousand years, is known as “Huguan Codonopsis.” Its geographical trademark has taken three years and is now close to successful registration. Geographical trademarks are primarily used to certify the origin, raw materials, manufacturing methods, quality, or other specific attributes of a product. “Huguan Codonopsis” is produced in the Taihang Mountain Grand Canyon of Huguan. According to records, the cultivation history of codonopsis in Huguan County can be traced back to the Han and Tang dynasties, spanning a thousand years. In particular, the codonopsis from Zituan Mountain within the Taihang Mountain Grand Canyon is considered the finest of its kind and has long been an imperial tribute throughout various dynasties. The great Song Dynasty poet Su Shi once wrote the poem “Zituan Codonopsis Sent to Wang Dingguo,” in which he sang high praises of Zituan Codonopsis.

In recent years, due to the lack of branding, it has been impossible to form scale synergy or achieve quality advantages. As a result, the cultivation and market presence of Huguan Codonopsis have remained limited, unable to reach a larger scale. To revive Zituan Mountain Codonopsis, in 2008, the Huguan County Traditional Chinese Medicine Association applied to the National Trademark Office for a certification mark of origin as the applicant. After six rounds of additional documentation submissions, the application finally passed the preliminary review.

Currently, the cultivation of Huguan Codonopsis has covered most towns and townships in the county, with a planting area of over 600 acres. Once the “Huguan Codonopsis” certification trademark is successfully registered, it will greatly enhance the visibility of “Huguan Codonopsis,” bringing new vitality to this ancient medicinal variety.
