Beiyuan Steamed Buns
Beiyuan Steamed Buns
Beiyuan (Northern Plateau) is located in the heart of the Emei Ridge and is a plateau area within Wenxi County. It serves as a prime wheat-growing region for the county, cultivating over 40,000 mu of high-quality wheat. The wheat grown here has a growth period that is several dozen days longer than in other areas. The steamed buns made from this wheat flour are fragrant, chewy, and highly nutritious, offering a sweet and aromatic taste in the mouth. The “Beiyuan Steamed Buns” (also known as “Northern Plateau Steamed Buns”) have gained great reputation and have become one of the fashionable gifts locals give when visiting relatives and friends or during festivals and holidays. In the region, persimmon leaf tea and Zhuping (boiled cakes) are also equally popular.
Nowadays, there are many steamed buns (including decorative flower buns) on the market referred to as Beiyuan Steamed Buns (flower buns). Although the production techniques of these buns are the same as those used for Beiyuan (Northern Plateau) steamed buns (flower buns), they do not use the wheat flour or water sourced from the Northern Plateau. As a result, they lack the distinctive flavor of true Beiyuan (Northern Plateau) steamed buns (flower buns).
Authentic Beiyuan Steamed Buns (Northern Plateau Steamed Buns) not only use flour from the Beiyuan (Northern Plateau) area but also water from the same region. Due to the high elevation, deep groundwater levels, and excellent water quality of Beiyuan, only steamed buns made with both the local flour and water can be considered genuine Beiyuan Steamed Buns. Only then can you truly savor their sweet and fragrant taste.
The Wenxi Northern Plateau (Beiyuan) flower buns feature a complete and diverse system, including festival flower buns, wedding flower buns, birthday flower buns, funeral flower buns, house-raising ceremony flower buns, and house-moving flower buns. The largest flower buns can have a diameter of over sixty centimeters and weigh more than ten kilograms, while the smallest may be just a few centimeters in diameter—truly astonishing. Besides being edible, these buns also possess strong artistic and ornamental value.
