Huitong County currently has 4,400 hectares of citrus orchards, including 2,000 hectares dedicated to navel orange cultivation, primarily of the Newhall, Hamlin, and Ponkan varieties. Huitong navel oranges have won gold and silver awards in Hunan Province’s High-Quality Fruit Evaluation, as well as the National Ministry of Agriculture’s Quality Agricultural Products Award. This project integrates production, processing, storage, and sales in an organic manner, proposes establishing large-scale pollution-free navel orange production bases, improves processing and storage facilities, and implements an enterprise + farmer + base industrialized management model.

Navel oranges are of excellent quality, seedless, juicy, and brightly colored, making them a sought-after citrus variety cultivated around the world. The juice of navel oranges contains 11–15% soluble solids.

They contain 11–13 grams of sugar, 0.8–0.95 grams of citric acid, and 55–75 milligrams of vitamin C per 100 milliliters of juice. In addition, they are rich in vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin P, carotene, calcium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium, potassium, sodium, as well as cancer-fighting compounds such as (R)-limonene, coumarin, flavonoids, limonoid analogs, carotenoids, glyceroglycolipids, Y-lactones, and pectin. They are considered an outstanding health-promoting, nutritious green food. The mature fruit’s peel oil cells and pulp juice vesicles contain high-grade alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, volatile organic acids, and terpenes, which emit an enticing aroma—filling a room with fragrance when placed nearby and delighting the palate when eaten—making them a widely beloved fruit.
