Reed Leaf Zongzi
Reed leaf (themeda) zongzi is a specialty food of the She ethnic group. It is made by wrapping glutinous rice soaked in yellow alkaline water for several hours with reed leaves, then boiling it until cooked. The zongzi is rectangular, about 20 centimeters long. Once cooked, the reed leaf zongzi turns a light yellow color, with a texture that is both sticky and not overly mushy. If a small amount of peas or golden beans, sheep’s beard beans, or other “bean zongzi” varieties are mixed into the glutinous rice, it becomes even more fragrant without being greasy—pleasing to the eye and offering a uniquely delicious flavor.
