Ganqimaodu Port

The name "Ganqimaodu" means "one tree" in Mongolian. This port is located within Bayinhanggai Sumu of Urad Middle Banner, Bayannur City, near Boundary Marker 703 on the China-Mongolia border. It is the only international passage open to the outside world in Bayannur City, corresponding to the Gashuunsukhait Port in Hanbogd Sum, South Gobi Province of Mongolia. The two ports are l kilometers apart.

On December 20, 1989, the Autonomous Region People's Government approved Ganqimaodu as a temporary cargo transit point for border trade with Mongolia. The first cargo shipment was completed on February 23, 1990. On June 4, 1992, it was officially designated as a national Class I seasonal bilateral port. On April 13, 2004, the General Administration of Customs of China approved the temporary opening of Ganqimaodu Port during its non-operational period for coal transportation before December 31, 2004. On July 5, 2004, the governments of China and Mongolia signed the "Agreement between the Government of the People's Republic of China and the Government of Mongolia on Border Ports and Their Management Systems," which came into effect on September 28, 2004. This elevated Ganqimaodu Port from a seasonal bilateral port to a year-round bilateral open port. Over the past 15 years of operation, the port has been opened 54 times, handled cargo 57 times, seen 696,000 inbound and outbound personnel, processed 114,000 inbound and outbound vehicles (trips), and achieved a cumulative cargo throughput of 460,000 tons (including 130,000 tons of small-scale trade and 330,000 tons of imported raw coal), with a total barter trade volume of 965 million yuan.

Border trade markets have flourished. During operational periods, the trade zone is bustling with shops, visitors, and the businesses of local residents—including 180 inns, over 50 retail outlets, and 32 yurts—all enjoying strong business and considerable profits. The annual turnover of border trade markets averages 50 million yuan, employing around 3,200 people per year, with an average of 350,000 transient individuals at the port annually. The port’s trade zone has evolved into a multifunctional commercial hub led by border trade, featuring a comprehensive and well-equipped service system. The port has become a growth driver for regional economic development and a hotspot for investment by merchants from across the country.
