Guangzhou Zhongshan Monument
The Guangzhou Zhongshan Monument is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
The Zhongshan Monument was built to commemorate Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the great democratic revolutionary. It is located atop Guanyin Mountain and can be reached by climbing 498 steps along the "Hundred Steps Stairway." The monument is situated in Yuexiu Park
and was built in 1929, designed by the famous architect Lü Yanzhi. The body of the monument is entirely constructed from granite, standing 37 meters high with a square base that tapers upward to a point. Inside the monument, a staircase winds its way to the top. The first and second levels have railings on all four sides offering panoramic views. Higher up, each level has windows for looking out over the distance. The upper part of the monument’s base features 26 stone-carved sheep heads on each of its four sides, symbolizing the “City of Rams.” The front of the stone tablet is a massive piece of granite, approximately 7 meters long and 4 meters wide, engraved with Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s testament. The full text of the testament reads:
“For forty years I have devoted myself to the cause of the people’s revolution with the aim of winning freedom and equality for China. Based on forty years of experience, I know that to achieve this goal, it is necessary to arouse the masses and unite with those nations of the world which treat us as equals, and struggle together.
As the revolution has not yet succeeded, all my comrades must strive onward in unity, in accordance with the principles set forth in The Fundamentals of National Reconstruction, The Outline of National Reconstruction, —, and the Manifesto of the First National Congress, in order to attain our goal. My recent proposals to convene a National Assembly and to abolish unequal treaties must be realized within the shortest possible time. This is my last injunction!”
The platform of the monument is surrounded by iron railings, with lush greenery all around. The Sun Yat-sen Monument and the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall are both situated along Guangzhou’s traditional urban central axis, forming a unified whole. Their majestic presence has made them a symbol of modern Guangzhou.
