The Lu Xun Memorial Hall is located at No. 215 Wenming Road (formerly No. 6 Wenming Road), on a site commonly known as the Bell Tower. Built in 1957, the hall opened to the public in 1959 and covers an area of 4,375 square meters.

On January 18, 1927, recommended by the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Party Central Committee and appointed by Sun Yat-sen University, Lu Xun came from Xiamen to Guangzhou to serve as Head of the Department of Chinese and Dean of Academic Affairs at Sun Yat-sen University. He initially lived in the “Bell Tower” at Sun Yat-sen University before moving to “Baiyun Building” on Baiyun Road on March 29.

The Lu Xun Memorial Hall has restored Lu Xun’s living environment at that time — his bedroom-cum-study and the university affairs meeting room of Sun Yat-sen University. The interior furnishings were very simple: the bed was two planks laid across two stools, covered with a linen mosquito net supported by bamboo poles, and topped with a white cloth pillow and a thin quilt with blue floral fabric, all very neat. Near the window, in front of the bed, stood a seven-drawer desk. It is said that only professors used this type of desk at the time. Next to the desk was a rattan bookshelf filled with thread-bound books. In addition, the room also contained a square table, a small tea table, and a rattan trunk with “L.S” (the English initials of Lu Xun’s name) handwritten by Lu Xun himself. All of these are original items from that period.

The Lu Xun Memorial Hall also features an exhibition room displaying the life and achievements of Lu Xun. The room houses nearly 10,000 precious items including Lu Xun’s manuscripts, cultural relics, photographs, and documents, and has established a computer search system for the Complete Works of Lu Xun.

Lu Xun (September 25, 1881 – October 19, 1936), originally named Zhou Zhangshou, later changed to Zhou Shuren, with courtesy names Yushan and later Yucan. “Lu Xun” was the pen name he used when publishing A Madman’s Diary in 1918, and it became his most widely recognized pseudonym. He was from Shaoxing, Zhejiang. A renowned writer and thinker, he was an important participant in the May Fourth New Culture Movement and a founding figure of modern Chinese literature. Mao Zedong once commented: “The direction taken by Lu Xun is the direction of the new culture of the Chinese nation.” [1-6]
