The Guangdong Museum of Art is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

The Guangdong Museum of Art is a modern multi-functional fine arts museum built to serve as a non-profit cultural institution dedicated to society and its development, open to the public. It was officially opened on November 28, 1997. Since June 29, 2011, it has offered free admission and was recognized that same year as one of the first batch of National Key Art Museums. The museum has a total floor area of 22,000 square meters, with 12 exhibition halls covering an exhibition area of 8,000 square meters, and an outdoor sculpture display area of 5,000 square meters. Its overall design and layout reflect unity with the functional nature of an art museum.

[Functions] The Guangdong Museum of Art encompasses six main functions: collection, research, exhibition, education, exchange, and service. Broadly speaking, these can be divided into three key aspects: academic function, educational function, and leisure function. The museum strives to embody the characteristics of a public cultural institution: firstly, the academic function, which establishes influential academic positions through an international perspective and rigorous art historical approach within a diverse academic environment; secondly, the educational function, which subtly cultivates aesthetic appreciation among visitors through visual art, display methods, and interactive experiences; thirdly, the leisure function, which offers a pleasant and relaxing cultural space through its elegant environment, refined artistic atmosphere, and range of services.

[Academics] The Guangdong Museum of Art focuses its academic research and collection on “modern and contemporary coastal art of China, overseas Chinese art, and contemporary Chinese art.” Guided by the philosophy of being rooted in local culture, engaging with domestic developments, and strengthening international exchanges, it emphasizes both “coastal character” and “contemporaneity.” With a self-directed academic vision and an open, pluralistic approach, the museum not only highlights the study and presentation of modern art but also pays close attention to contemporary art. It showcases cultural spirit from both history and the present, as well as from local and international contexts, to audiences through art. In terms of artistic forms and categories, it values the development and transformation of traditional forms such as ink painting, oil painting, printmaking, and sculpture within contemporary contexts, while also embracing new forms like installation and video art. This ensures the collection reflects the current state and overall characteristics of contemporary art to a significant extent.

The Guangdong Museum of Art has collected 36,000 works (sets) and is committed to examining and reinterpreting artworks within historical or social contexts, thereby activating its collection resources from multiple perspectives. In recent years, through historical梳理, excavation, and research of its collection, the museum has curated various forms of exhibitions showcasing its finest works and masterpieces, including the 2013 “Wind · Elegance · Ode – 15th Anniversary Collection Exhibition,” the 2014 “Jia Wu · Jia Wu – A Century of National Rejuvenation Dreams,” the 2015 “The Way of the Great Way – Lai Shaoqi Centennial Works Exhibition” and “Dialogue of the Century – The Academic Debate between the Lingnan School and the Guangzhou Chinese Painting Research Association,” as well as the 2016 “I Love Sunshine and Flowers – Zheng Shuang Works Exhibition” and “Cultivating Art from the Ground Up – From Chishe to the Guangzhou Municipal School of Fine Arts.” These exhibitions reflect the museum’s focus on 20th-century Chinese art and art from Guangdong.

While promoting local art and traditional culture, the Guangdong Museum of Art has also established internationally influential cultural brands such as the “Guangzhou Triennial” and “Guangzhou International Photo Biennale.” It continuously innovates and enriches its exhibition models and academic approaches, using greater openness to advance the development of contemporary Chinese art. Additionally, the museum enhances international cultural exchanges with a global perspective, organizing a series of major international forums. For example, in 2016, it successfully hosted the “Multiple Perspectives in Contemporary Contexts – Guangdong Museum of Art Curators’ Forum 2016,” maximizing resource sharing through communication and dialogue. This effort helps build a curatorial mechanism suited to the times and jointly promotes the development of Chinese art and museum construction.

[Services] The Guangdong Museum of Art is dedicated to creating a leisurely and comfortable environment within the museum: it provides rest areas, reading zones, and has established the “Guangdong Museum of Art Humanities Library.” Leveraging its unique collections and resources, the library showcases various forms of art, offering visitors access to more art-related information and helping to enhance public artistic literacy. The museum also organizes a range of public education activities, including lectures, guided tours, workshops, “Viewing Exhibitions with Artists,” “Museum Classrooms,” and “Art Beyond Walls,” all aimed at helping audiences perceive artworks, understand exhibitions, and experience art.

To realize the concept of bringing art to the public, the Guangdong Museum of Art has explored multiple avenues for artistic presentation. It attempts to step outside the museum walls, returning art to society so the public can actively engage with artistic activities. The perfect integration of artworks with urban public spaces achieves a shift from single-space to multi-dimensional, open artistic displays.
