Xiyuan

Known as the “Home of Penjing,” the garden showcases many fine works representing the Lingnan style of penjing and is located on the west side of Liuhua Lake along Dongfeng West Road.

Xiyuan houses a thousand penjing pieces, divided into two main categories: tree stump penjing and rock mountain penjing, with tree stump penjing being the primary focus. Upon entering from the south gate and passing through the winding path and small bridge under the rockery, you’ll come to a small island where ancient banyan trees float in lush greenery. Here, you can view thousands of uniquely styled potted plants and penjing. Natural landscapes such as high mountains, long rivers, peculiar peaks, and secluded valleys are all miniaturized within these tiny pots. Coupled with streams, winding corridors, pavilions, waterside gazebos, rockeries, and lotus ponds, the garden exudes a strong Lingnan courtyard ambiance, complementing the beautiful scenery of Liuhua Park. The small space evokes a grand sense of scale, enhancing its overall impact. The garden also features three teahouses and coffee rooms, some situated by the lake and others shaded by banyan trees, allowing visitors to enjoy tea while appreciating the charm of penjing and the garden landscape.

Located on the west side of Liuhua Lake along Dongfeng West Road in Yuexiu District, the park covers an area of about 30,000 square meters and is primarily dedicated to cultivating and displaying penjing, earning it the reputation as the “Home of Penjing.” It was built in December 1964. The main gate features a stone mountain cave screen wall, with the front section serving as an exhibition hall, the middle section as the penjing garden, and the rear section as a reception hall. The garden boasts winding paths, corridors, lotus ponds, willow-lined banks, small verdant islands, and the chirping of birds and fragrance of flowers, creating a serene and picturesque environment. Over 300 various types of Lingnan penjing are displayed in exhibition halls such as the Banyan Shade Pavilion, gazebos, and greenhouses. In 1986, when British Queen Elizabeth II visited, she planted a precious oak tree imported from the UK together with then-Governor Ye Xuanping. That year, penjing from Xiyuan participated in the 5th International Flower Expo held in Italy, winning three gold awards and one silver award, bringing honor to the country.
