Guangzhou Folk Finance Street is a protected cultural heritage site of Guangzhou.

Guangzhou Folk Finance Street is located on Changdi Avenue in Yuexiu District, adjacent to the northern bank of the Pearl River, stretching over 800 meters in length. As early as 80 years ago, Changdi was known as the “Financial Street of China.” After experiencing periods of prosperity, decline, and revival, Changdi has now repositioned itself around the folk finance industry and is once again on the rise, exuding an even stronger “financial vibe.” Along the finance street, various financial sculptures with different symbolic meanings stand along the sidewalk. Entering from the street entrance, visitors can see the main sculpture “Economic Governance for the World,” along with secondary sculptures such as “Golden Key,” “Fortune Ruyi,” “First Pot of Gold,” “Five Rams Tripod,” and the “Guangzhou Finance Street Emblem.” Among them, the emblem of Guangzhou Finance Street takes inspiration from the traditional abacus, symbolizing meanings related to finance and accounting.

Guangzhou’s Changdi has been directly linked to commerce and finance since its construction. Over a hundred years ago, Zhang Zhidong built Guangzhou Changdi to “prevent floods” and “promote commerce,” channeling the prosperity of Xiguan toward Changdi. Eighty-eight years ago, when Dr. Sun Yat-sen personally founded the Central Bank at No. 193 Zhongshan Middle Road, Changdi—boosted by the trade momentum since the Qing Dynasty’s single-port trade policy—was already a vibrant hub with “crisscrossing docks and bustling goods,” becoming a strategic beachhead for international businesses and foreign firms entering China. Since then, Guangzhou Changdi has earned the reputation as the “No. 1 Financial Street of China.”

More than 100 years later, after going through cycles of prosperity, decline, and rebirth, the official establishment and opening of Guangzhou Folk Finance Street have driven the century-old Changdi to embark on a new journey in financial development. Finance and commerce have always coexisted and risen and fallen together. The rise and renaissance of Changdi’s finance are deeply intertwined with the commercial and cultural heritage of this millennia-old trading city. Today, as Guangzhou explores its path to becoming a world-renowned commercial hub, the future of Changdi’s finance is something to look forward to.
