Dongshan Lake Park

Dongshan Lake Park is located on Donghu Road in Guangzhou and is one of the city's four major artificial lake parks.

The name "Dongshan" originates from a hill in Xiaodongyuan, north of ancient Guangzhou City. This hill, together with Xishan to the southwest of Liuhua Lake and Beishan (i.e., Yuexiu Mountain) to the north of the city, forms a contrast and is referred to as Dongshan. The abbreviation "Donghu" (East Lake) of Dongshan Lake corresponds to the ancient "Xihu" (West Lake) of Yaozhou.

Before 1958, this area was a foul-smelling waterlogged field and vegetable farmland. In April 1958, under the advocacy of then-Mayor Zhu Guang, residents from all walks of life in Dongshan District volunteered to build the park. It was completed and opened to visitors in 1959, and was named Dongshan Lake Park. The park centers around the lake, with embankments forming its main sightseeing routes. The North Embankment is lined with banyan trees, while the Middle Embankment features Malay apples, weeping willows, and red cotton trees. There are four peninsulas and two small islands in the lake, connected by a zigzag bridge, a rainbow-falling bridge, an arch bridge, a five-arch bridge, and a three-zigzag bridge. In spring, when peach blossoms are red and willows are green, the scenery is particularly beautiful, with shimmering lake waters and lush flowers and trees. It was once honored as one of the “New Eight Scenic Spots of Yangcheng” – Donghu Spring Dawn.

The zigzag bridge is the iconic structure of Dongshan Lake Park, exuding the grandeur of an imperial garden. With its winding path and light red railings, it complements the green water and adds vibrant splendor to the lake. Strolling along the bridge, visitors can enjoy different views at every turn. Boating on the lake, with the breeze gently blowing and ripples glistening like wheels, brings a refreshing and delightful experience.

The five-arch bridge made of bluestone gives visitors a sense of the openness and serenity of the countryside. The single-arch bridge and the Rainbow-Falling Bridge resemble the charm of Suzhou gardens, while the low bridges over the blue water add a touch of romance to the park. Small bridges and lake waters within the park, shaded by verdant greenery and dotted with reds and greens, swaying willows, evoke boundless reverie among visitors. Whether strolling on the bridges or boating on the lake, gazing at the elegant skyscrapers along the Pearl River or admiring the water and sky reflections on the lake surface, offers a uniquely charming experience. The park also features pleasure boats, fishing gear, dance floors, roller skating rinks, as well as recreational areas for seniors and children, making it an appealing destination in the bustling urban area.
