Guangzhou Museum of Art is a national AAA-level tourist attraction and a patriotic education base.

Guangzhou Museum of Art is situated at the foot of Baiyun Mountain in the northern part of Guangzhou City, by the side of Luhu Lake. It covers an area of 20,300 square meters with a building area of 40,300 square meters. The museum was formerly the Guangzhou Art Museum, which had a history of over forty years. In 1995, the Guangzhou Municipal Government selected a new site and initiated the construction of the Guangzhou Museum of Art. The first phase of the project was completed in the autumn of 2000, and the museum officially opened to the public on September 23, 2000. The second phase was completed in 2003. It is a large-scale art museum in South China, integrating collection, research, exhibition, education, exchange, and leisure. The museum currently has 19 exhibition halls (galleries), as well as a multifunctional lecture hall, cultural relics storage, cultural relics restoration rooms, art appreciation rooms, and more. It boasts comprehensive professional functions, well-equipped facilities, and a rich artistic atmosphere. In 2015, it was designated as a National Key Art Museum.

Guangzhou Art Museum

The museum’s collection is primarily based on Chinese paintings and calligraphy from various dynasties, with a particular emphasis on works from the Lingnan region, while also encompassing other categories of historical artworks. The collection includes Chinese paintings, calligraphy, oil paintings, prints, watercolors, gouaches, pastel paintings, comics, lacquer paintings, sculptures, thangkas, bronzes, ceramics, woodwork, paper-cuttings, and more. The items date from the Neolithic Age to the contemporary period, many of which are national treasure-level artifacts, possessing significant artistic and historical value.

The museum’s permanent exhibition halls (areas) include: The Chinese Historical Painting Gallery, Lingnan Gallery, Gao Jianfu Art Gallery, Chen Shuren Art Gallery, Lai Shaoqi Art Gallery, Guan Shanyue Art Gallery, Li Xiongcai Art Gallery, Zhao Shao’ang Art Gallery, Yang Shanshen Art Gallery, Liao Bingxiong Art Gallery, Yang Zhiguang Art Gallery, Ou Chu Art Museum, Zhao Tailai Collection Gallery, Ma Sicong Music Art Gallery, and the Sculpture Exhibition Area. Temporary exhibition halls (galleries) include: Thematic Exhibition Halls, Convention and Exhibition Halls, Art Exchange Halls, and International Art Exchange Galleries.

Each year, the museum organizes various types of thematic exhibitions centered around its rich collection, accompanied by the publication of academic series and the hosting of numerous academic seminars. At the same time, the museum places great emphasis on cultural and artistic exchange activities, regularly introducing outstanding art exhibitions from domestic and international cultural institutions, while also actively promoting local Lingnan culture and art. The museum also pays attention to the development trends of contemporary Chinese art and international art, periodically hosting exhibitions of important contemporary artists as well as domestic and international art exchange shows, allowing the public to stay informed about the current state of art both in China and abroad.
