The Guangdong Overseas Chinese Museum is a cultural tourism attraction.

The Guangdong Overseas Chinese Museum is a public welfare category I institution directly under the Guangdong Provincial Overseas Chinese Affairs Office. It is the only provincial-level professional overseas Chinese museum in China. The foundation stone was laid in 1995, construction was completed in 2002, and the museum opened to the public in November 2009. It currently houses a collection of over 4,000 items (sets). In 2010, it was designated as a Guangdong Provincial Base for the Inheritance of Chinese Culture.

The museum building has a total floor area of 6,000 square meters, with an exhibition area of 4,200 square meters. The total investment was 42 million yuan, including 17 million yuan from the provincial government budget, nearly 17 million yuan in donations from overseas Chinese, Hong Kong and Macao compatriots, and all sectors of society, and 8 million yuan invested by the Guangdong Provincial Overseas Chinese Affairs Office. The thematic exhibitions consist of the History of Overseas Chinese in Guangdong, Traditional Overseas Chinese Residences in Guangdong, and a Retrospective on the Construction of the Guangdong Overseas Chinese Museum. The History of Overseas Chinese in Guangdong is divided into six sections: Migration Overseas, Hard Struggles and Pioneering, Cultural Heritage, Enduring Spirit, Love for Hometown, and Overseas Chinese Affairs. It comprehensively and systematically showcases the history and culture of Guangdong's overseas Chinese and highlights the historical contributions of overseas Chinese, Hong Kong and Macao compatriots, and returned overseas Chinese and their families. The museum also frequently hosts special exhibitions on overseas Chinese culture and art.

Guided by the mission of serving the nation, serving overseas Chinese, and serving society, the museum strives to become a key base for collecting and researching historical documents and relics related to overseas Chinese, showcasing overseas Chinese culture, promoting the spirit of overseas Chinese, inheriting overseas Chinese heritage, conducting cultural exchanges, and providing public cultural services.

The Guangdong Overseas Chinese Museum is located on Ersha Island in Yuexiu District, Guangzhou City, adjacent to the Guangdong Museum of Art to the east, the Xinghai Concert Hall to the south, and the Guangdong Provincial Government Overseas Chinese Affairs Office to the west. With a building area of 4,185 square meters, it is under the administration of the Guangdong Provincial Government Overseas Chinese Affairs Office. Dedicated to serving the nation, serving overseas Chinese, and serving society, the museum integrates the collection, display, research, and exchange of the history and culture of overseas Chinese and Chinese hometowns. It serves as a patriotic education base that highlights the contributions of overseas Chinese to their ancestral homeland, hometowns, and host countries, showcases the history and culture of overseas Chinese, promotes the patriotic national spirit of overseas Chinese, facilitates cultural exchanges, and inherits Chinese culture. It acts as a bond and bridge connecting overseas Chinese with Guangdong and their hometowns.

Development History

On April 20, 1995, a grand groundbreaking ceremony was held. Key leaders of Guangdong Province at the time, including a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee—, and Lu Zhonghe, member of the Standing Committee of the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee, Vice Governor, and Director of the Preparatory Committee for the Guangdong Overseas Chinese Museum, as well as distinguished guests from home and abroad such as Thai Chinese philanthropist Xie Huiru, attended the ceremony. The museum was largely completed in 2002, passed final acceptance inspection in April 2009, and began operation. The Guangdong Overseas Chinese Museum aims to become a provincial-level professional overseas Chinese museum that uses modern high-tech methods and embodies the characteristics of Guangdong to comprehensively and systematically showcase the development history of overseas Chinese in Guangdong, highlighting the historical achievements of overseas Chinese. It serves as a patriotic education base, a base for the inheritance of Chinese culture, and a base for nurturing overseas Chinese resources, spreading and showcasing the profound historical and cultural heritage of overseas Chinese and Guangdong’s overseas Chinese hometowns. Since its establishment, the museum has received over 10 million yuan in construction funding from Thai Chinese philanthropist Xie Huiru, the Hong Kong Taishan Chamber of Commerce, and other overseas Chinese, Hong Kong and Macao compatriots, and overseas Chinese affairs officials. A collection of historical relics, calligraphy, paintings, and photography works related to overseas Chinese have been donated, laying a solid foundation for the museum’s construction and development.
