Guangdong Provincial Library of Sun Yat-sen is a provincial-level comprehensive public library in Guangdong, a national first-class library, and also the site of the Guangdong Branch of the National Cultural Information Resources Sharing Project, the Guangdong Ancient Books Preservation Center, and the Guangdong Branch of the National Union Catalog Center. With a long history and rich collections, it is widely renowned both domestically and internationally. Established in 1912, it was originally the “Nanyuan,” a famous scenic spot in Guangzhou during the Ming Dynasty, later becoming the library building of the Guangya Printing House during the Qing Dynasty. The “Kangfengxuan” within it served as a secret base for Sun Yat-sen’s early revolutionary activities. In 1986, Comrade Deng Xiaoping personally inscribed the name of the Guangdong Provincial Library of Sun Yat-sen.

In 2003, the Guangdong Provincial Government invested 500 million yuan to implement the renovation and expansion project of the Guangdong Provincial Library of Sun Yat-sen. The entire project highlighted features such as ecological reverence, energy-saving priority, frugality, and cultural richness. In 2008, it was recognized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development as a “Double Hundred” Demonstration Project for green buildings and low-energy buildings.

On December 30, 2010, the first phase of the renovation and expansion project was completed and officially opened to the public. The new library introduced a “reader card” system and self-service borrowing and returning services, as well as advanced technological offerings such as touch-screen newspaper reading systems, 3D special collection resource display systems, and mobile libraries, welcoming readers from all over with a brand-new look.

At present, Guangdong Provincial Library of Sun Yat-sen is actively playing the leading role of a provincial-level library, continuously improving its hardware and software facilities, vigorously promoting free access, and wholeheartedly providing the public with comprehensive, high-quality reader services.

Guangdong Provincial Library of Sun Yat-sen has successively won titles such as “National Civilized Library,” “Advanced Collective in the National Cultural System,” “Guangdong Civilized Window,” and “Library Loved by Readers.” Projects organized and implemented by the Guangdong Provincial Library of Sun Yat-sen, such as the “Guangdong Mobile Library” and the “Online Joint Reference Consultation Service,” have been awarded China’s highest cultural honors — the 14th National “Masses’ Star Award,” the first Innovation Award, and the Special Prize of the second Innovation Award from the Ministry of Culture.
