Guangzhou Uprising Memorial Hall

The Guangzhou Uprising Memorial Hall is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit, a classic red tourism destination, and a patriotic education base.

The Guangzhou Uprising Memorial Hall, also known as the former site of the Guangzhou Commune, was originally the Public Security Bureau of Guangdong Province under the Nationalist Government of the Republic of China. Located at No. 200-1 Qiyi Road, Guangzhou City, China, it was the site of the Soviet government — the Guangzhou Commune — established during the Guangzhou Uprising led by Zhang Tailei of the Communist Party of China.

The Soviet government was promptly dissolved after the failure of the Guangzhou Uprising. Although the Guangzhou Commune lasted only three days, it was the first Soviet government established in a major Chinese city and is hailed as the "Paris Commune of the East."

After the liberation of Guangzhou by the People's Liberation Army in 1949, the Public Security Bureau was taken over by the Guangzhou Municipal People's Government, which established the Guangzhou Public Security Bureau there. In 1956, the Guangzhou Municipal People's Government opened the South Building as an exhibition room for the Guangzhou Uprising, accessible internally. In 1987, the Guangzhou Public Security Bureau handed over the South Building, Central Building, and Gate Tower of the former site to the cultural relics department. The site was then restored, and the Guangzhou Uprising Memorial Hall was established. Ye Jianying inscribed the plaque "Former Site of the Guangzhou Commune." Due to space limitations at the Public Security Bureau, the remaining North Building and detention facilities of the former site were not handed over to the cultural relics department until the end of 2005. Restoration work on the memorial hall began in 2006, during which artifacts such as shells and pistols were discovered in the North Building. It reopened in 2007.

Although the Guangzhou Public Security Bureau eventually handed over the entire site, the bureau and the Guangzhou City- Bureau still remain adjacent to the Guangzhou Uprising Memorial Hall, sharing the same address.
