Guangzhou Origin Point

The Guangzhou Origin Point is the city's coordinate origin, located in the South Square of People's Park in front of the Guangzhou Municipal Government along the city's traditional central axis. The directions and distances of major buildings and historic sites in Guangzhou can be measured from this point. The Guangzhou Origin Point was completed on October 21, 2010.

Made of 3 tons of refined copper, the Guangzhou Origin Point — the geographical center of Guangzhou — not only welcomes visitors to step on it for photos but also features an anti-pry, anti-theft, automatic alarm system, aiming to stay “shiny as new” for millennia.

The surface of the origin marker is slightly raised, standing 15 centimeters above the ground with a diameter of 3 meters. The marker is edged with gray and black granite, inlaid with bronze strips along the radiating lines, and features an intaglio engraving of a brief history of Guangzhou’s founding on the granite surface. The inner disc is made of 2-centimeter-thick yellow brass plate and Brazilian crystal stone, weighing 3 tons. Its pattern is inspired by the “Dragon and Phoenix Jade Pendant” and the “Feathered Man Sailing a Boat” reliefs unearthed from the Tomb of the Nanyue King, highlighting the cultural characteristics of Lingnan. The bronze disc of the city origin was crafted differently from typical bronze sculptures — instead of using casting, it was made through computer-controlled, mechanical, and hand-carving methods. A total of 37 workers spent 35 days completing it.
