Chen Shuren Memorial Hall, located at No. 10 Shuqian Road, Dongshan, is a commemorative structure built on the site of the former residence “Chuyuan” of Chen Shuren, one of the founders of the Lingnan School of Painting. The original residence was destroyed during the Anti-Japanese War. The memorial hall was completed and opened to the public on November 26, 1988. It is a round-arched building inlaid with white marble and features two floors of exhibition halls. The first floor houses the Lingnan Art Gallery, which hosts art exhibitions on an irregular basis; the second floor displays Chen Shuren’s calligraphy, paintings, and historical materials. It also includes the “Sifou Tower,” a memorial dedicated to Chen Fu, Chen Shuren’s son and a revolutionary martyr.

Chen Shuren, whose given name was Shao, also known as Zhe, and with the alias Jiawai Yuzi, was a native of Mingjing Township, Panyu County. He developed a love for art from a young age and studied under the renowned painter Ju Lian in his early years. Later, he worked as a chief writer for Hong Kong newspapers such as the Guangdong Daily, The So-Called Daily, and the Current Affairs Pictorial, where he, along with the China Daily of the Revive China Society, advocated for revolution and opposed the constitutional monarchy proposed by Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao. In 1905, he met Sun Yat-sen in Hong Kong and joined the Chinese Revolutionary Alliance. In 1906, he funded his own studies at the Kyoto School of Fine Arts in Japan.
