Former Residence of Zhang Fakui

The former residence of Zhang Fakui is a cultural tourism attraction.

The former residence of Zhang Fakui is located at No. 2-4, Xiaoyou East Lane, Cui Fu Street, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou. It is a two-story brick-and-wood building facing south with its back to the north. The second floor has a balcony at the front, and each floor covers an area of about 70 square meters. There is also a rooftop terrace. The structure largely retains its original appearance. Currently, Building No. 2 is inhabited by his descendants, while Building No. 4 serves as the site of the Xianghua Memorial Hall and the alumni association of Zhirui Middle School.

Zhang Fakui (1896–1980), courtesy name Xianghua, was a native of Shixing, Guangdong. In 1912, he enrolled in the Whampoa Army Primary School, joined the Tongmenghui (Chinese Revolutionary Alliance), and participated in the campaign against Yuan Shikai and the expulsion of the Old Guangxi Clique from Guangdong. From 1921 to 1922, during Sun Yat-sen’s Northern Expedition, he served as a battalion commander in the Guard Regiment, providing security in Guilin and Shaoguan. When Sun Yat-sen sought to ally with Yunnan and Guangxi forces to march into Guangdong and fight Chen Jiongming, Zhang responded by rising in arms alongside Deng Yanda. Later, he served as a regimental and brigade commander under Li Jishen, taking part in the First and Second Eastern Expeditions and the Southern Expedition, eventually being promoted to commander of the 12th Division of the 4th Army.
