Former Residence of Gu Yingfen
The former residence of Gu Yingfen is a cultural tourism attraction.
The Gu family residence is located at No. 56 Cangbian Road, Yuexiu District. This residence served as the family home of Gu Yingfen in Guangzhou. The building features distinctive architectural characteristics of the Republican era, blending Chinese and Western styles. Its exterior has been renovated, and the current front entrance now houses a restaurant. Legend has it that during Chen Jiongming’s rebellion when the Presidential Palace was shelled, Sun Yat-sen and his wife were forced to retreat to warships at White Goose Pond. Later, with the assistance of He Xiangning, Gu Yingfen, and others, they were brought here to stay temporarily. The house covers an area of about 900 square meters, and its internal structures have not undergone major changes. It was once the Gu family ancestral hall and was returned to the Gu family in 1987. According to Gu Peng, Gu Yingfen’s son, since Gu Yingfen was relatively incorruptible while serving as the head of the Finance Department in Guangzhou, the government at the time purchased this property for his residence. He left no inheritance after his death, so the Nationalist Government built this building for his family to live in. The current front entrance is occupied by Hongyuan Restaurant, which serves Chinese cuisine.
Gu Yingfen (1875–1931), courtesy name Xiangqin, also known as Xiangqin, was from Panyu County, Guangdong Province. He graduated from the Speedy Course in Politics and Law at Japan’s Meiji University, where he was a classmate of Hu Hanmin. While in Japan, he often socialized with Zhu Zhixin, Wang Jingwei, Chen Shuren, and others, and was a member of the Tongmenghui (Chinese Revolutionary Alliance).
In the 33rd year of the Guangxu reign (1907), he returned to China and served as a compiler at the Guangzhou School of Law and Politics and as the chief clerk of the Guangdong Provincial Advisory Bureau. In the final years of the Xuantong reign, he participated in the “March 29” uprising in Guangzhou. After its failure, he fled to Hong Kong. Following the Wuchang Uprising and the liberation of Guangzhou, he returned with Hu Hanmin and served as the Director of the Comptroller's Office of the Guangdong Military Government. 191… More detailed information about Gu Yingfen ++
