Tomb of Zhang Minjie

The Tomb of Zhang Minjie is a Guangzhou Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Tomb of Zhang Minjie is located on the west side of Guangzhou Zoo on Xianlie Road. It was selected by Xu Chongzhi and built in 1926. The entrance to the tomb is a two-pillar granite archway, with the horizontal inscription “Tomb Path of Mr. Zhang Minjie” on the lintel. On the right side of the cement path inside the archway is a shelter pavilion and a stele inscribed by Deng Zeru and written by Zou Lu, while on the left is a rostrum, inside which a stone tablet is engraved with the four characters “Donated Life for the Country,” flanked by tablets inscribed with “Tong Wen” (Understand Literature) and “Da Li” (Understand Reason). Ascending the steps along the tomb path leads to a semicircular tomb hall. A stone tablet inscribed with “Tomb of Mr. Zhang Minjie” by Tan Yankai is embedded in the granite wall at the center of the hall. In front of the tablet is a granite offering table. The cemetery covers an area of 2,438 square meters, with lush trees throughout, creating a solemn and respectful atmosphere. In August 1983, it was designated as a municipal-level cultural relics protection unit by the Guangzhou Municipal People’s Government.

Zhang Minjie (1885–1925)

Zhang Minjie was from Jiaying Prefecture, Guangdong (now Meizhou). His father went to Southeast Asia to seek a livelihood due to poverty. Not long after Zhang was born, his mother, Madam Liang, passed away. At the age of 9, he followed his uncle Zhang Fu to Penang (now known as “George Town, Penang”) in Malaya to join his father. He first attended an English school, then a dialect training institute. After graduation, he became proficient in multiple languages and worked successively as an interpreter at courts in Kuala Lumpur, Seremban, Ipoh, Batu Gajah, and Tanjung Malim.
