Former Residence of Yang Pao’an
The former residence of Yang Pao’an is a Guangdong Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit and a classic red tourism site.
The former residence of Yang Pao’an is located at No. 116 Yuehua Road, Yuexiu District, in a lane within the office of the Labor Service Company of Guangdong Sugar Machinery Factory, inside the compound of the Provincial Light Industry Department. It was originally a two-courtyard, north-facing ancestral hall built by the Yang family from Beishan, Nanping (now part of Zhuhai), Xiangshan County, serving as a clan hall in Guangzhou and also as lodging for Yang family members who came to the city to study. The original structure was a two-courtyard building facing south, approximately 13 meters wide, with a horizontal plaque reading “Sìrú Shūshì” (Study Room of Four Confucians) hanging above. The wing rooms on both sides of the courtyard between the front and rear sections of the building, and there was an auxiliary hall outside the right wing room, but now only the front section remains, along with some temporary structures that have significantly altered its original appearance. In the seventh year of the Republic of China (1918), Yang Pao’an moved his entire family to Guangzhou and took up residence in the Yang Family Ancestral Hall, where he began promoting materialism and socialism in the city.
Yang Pao’an’s writings, which introduced historical materialism, the theory of class struggle, and political economy, were widely welcomed in society. The Yang Family Ancestral Hall thus became the main site of his activities. Tan Pingshan, Chen Gongbo, Tan Zhitang, Liu Ersong, Feng Jupo, Yang Yin, Su Zhaozheng, and others often met here to discuss and plan their work. Later, Communist Party members such as Liu Shaoqi, Zhang Tailei, Li Lisan, and Mu Qing also frequently gathered here to study the Party’s work in Guangdong. The Yang Family Ancestral Hall also became an important site for the activities of the Party and the Communist Youth League during the Great Revolution period.
On April 19, 2019, the former residence of Yang Pao’an was designated as part of the ninth batch of Guangdong Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Units.
