The former site of the Wuxianmen Power Plant is located near No. 421 Yanjiang West Road, Yuexiu District. Originally built in 1901, it currently covers an area of approximately 2,636 m², with a building area of about 8,482 m². It was the earliest commercial power plant in South China and also the first thermal power plant in the history of Guangzhou.

Because it was located near the Wuxianmen, a southern gate of Guangzhou during the Ming and Qing dynasties, it was commonly known as the Wuxianmen Power Plant among the public. In 2008, the former site of the Wuxianmen Power Plant was listed as a Guangzhou Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit, and it was later designated for use as the Guangzhou Overseas Chinese Museum.
