Tomb of Wu Tingfang and Tomb of Wu Chaoshu

The tombs of Wu Tingfang and Wu Chaoshu are Guangzhou Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Units.

The tombs of Wu Tingfang and Wu Chaoshu are located within Yuexiu Park on Jiefang North Road, Yuexiu District.

In December 2008, they were designated as part of the seventh batch of Guangzhou Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Units.

Wu Tingfang (1842–1922), originally named Xu, courtesy name Wenjue, also known as Wu Cai, styled Zhiyong, later changed his name to Tingfang. An ethnic Han from Xidun, Xinhui, Guangdong, he was an outstanding diplomat and jurist in the late Qing and early Republican periods. Born in Singapore, he returned to Fangcun, Guangzhou with his father at the age of three. He studied at St. Paul's College in Hong Kong in his early years, and in 1874, he funded his own studies in the UK, enrolling at University College London to study law. He earned a doctoral degree and became qualified as a barrister, becoming China’s first modern Doctor of Law. He later returned to Hong Kong to practice law and became the first Chinese member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong.

Wu Chaoshu (1883–1934)

Wu Chaoshu, courtesy name Tiyun, was from Xinhui, Guangdong, and was born in Tianjin. In the 22nd year of the Guangxu reign (1896), when his father Wu Tingfang served as the Chinese Minister to the United States, he accompanied his father to the U.S. and studied successively at Kosciusko School in Washington, the Western High School, and the Atlantic City High School. He returned to China in the 28th year of Guangxu, and in the 34th year, went to the University of London in the UK to study law. Three years later, he was awarded a Bachelor of Laws degree. He then furthered his studies at Lincoln's Inn, earning qualification as a barrister.
