Former Site of the Convalescent Home

The former site of the Convalescent Home is a protected cultural heritage site of Guangzhou.

The former site of the Convalescent Home is located at the Guangdong Provincial Ersha Sports Training Center on Ersha Island in Yuexiu District.

Known as Guangdong’s first “hotel hospital,” the former site of the Convalescent Home was built in the 1920s and is situated at the western end of Ersha Island, now within the Guangdong Provincial Sports Academy. The Convalescent Home was founded by Liang Peiji and once served as a “political refuge” for many high-ranking members of the Kuomintang, as well as a secret contact point for underground Communist Party members. The hospital was designed in imitation of Beijing’s Summer Palace, taking its name from the idea of convalescing and enjoying one’s later years, and was called the “Pearl River Convalescent Home & Retention Hospital.” It covers an area of approximately 20,000 square meters. The Convalescent Home consists of a garden, villas, and a hospital, with various flowers, plants, and trees planted around the grounds, creating an elegant environment.

In July 2002, it was designated as part of the sixth batch of Protected Cultural Heritage Sites of Guangzhou by the Guangzhou Municipal People’s Government.
