The Former Site of Pui To Middle School in Guangzhou, dating back to 1928, is an important modern historical site and representative building. In 1888, American Southern Baptist missionary Miss Emma Young was sent to China to establish education for girls, as most women at the time had not had the opportunity to attend school or been exposed to Christianity. At that time, Miss Young came to China with very little money, no materials to build a school, and no one to rely on. She opened Pui To Girls' Middle School in Wuxianmen, Guangzhou. It was not easy to persuade women to attend school at the time, as they were traditionally considered not in need of education. Classes began on March 3 of that year, initially called the Women and Children's Class, with six students enrolled, but she taught them wholeheartedly. She allowed women to bring their children to school. She also taught needlework to those with disabilities, enabling them to acquire a skill. Thanks to her efforts, the number of students gradually increased. In 1930, the school was officially approved and subsequently managed entirely by Chinese staff. In 1937, the Sino-Japanese War broke out, and Guangzhou suffered air raids, forcing the school to cease operations and relocate from Wuxianmen. The teachers, along with students who were willing to follow, left and moved temporarily to Zhaoqing to escape the war.
