Tanling Tianhu is located in the mountains of Fushan, about 50 kilometers northeast of Lianzhou City. It is formed by the encircling peaks of the Dadong Mountain Range, with the highest peak in the reservoir area reaching an elevation of 1,290 meters and the lake surface itself sitting at over 640 meters above sea level. As the highest-altitude mountain-top reservoir in Guangdong Province, it is known as the “First Heavenly Lake of Guangdong.”

Because of the high altitude, getting to Tianhu is not easy—you need to drive up a winding mountain road. On both sides of the road, one side is a steep cliff and the other a deep abyss, and you’ll also have to occasionally dodge mischievous squirrels. The scenic area is very considerate, having built several viewpoints along the most picturesque sections of the road, allowing visitors to stop and take in the unique beauty of the mountains at their own pace.

After rounding the mountaintop, when you see a large dam ahead, you’ve arrived at the Tanling Reservoir. Looking out, you’ll see numerous islands dotting the lake, covered in dense forests, creating a beautiful scene where mountains embrace the lake and the lake nestles among the mountains. Hiking through the hills, you can often spot waterfalls cascading into the lake, with birds skimming across the water and their calls clearly audible.

Boating on the lake offers another kind of experience. When you’re tired, you can climb up to the highest small hill—the Lake Heart Island—and enjoy the stunning view of Tianhu from the mountaintop. Alternatively, you can wander into the small village on the island to explore the rustic life of a mountain hamlet.
