Lianzhou Cultural Square

The cultural square is situated near the front of the Martyrs' Cemetery on the eastern side of downtown Lianzhou, adjacent to Lianzhou Middle School. It was designed by commission from the Guangzhou Design Institute. The first phase of the project had a total investment of 20 million yuan, covering an area of 25,000 square meters. At the front of the square stands a large white marble relief that reflects the long and rich history and culture of Lianzhou; the north side features a large performance area and stage covering 5,500 square meters; the northeast side has been developed into a landscape garden recreation area spanning 6,500 square meters; the south side showcases a large stainless steel sculpture representing the “Heavenly Waters of Huangchuan River,” which combines four local rivers in a 1,600-square-meter display; the southeast side is equipped with two fitness and recreational promenades. In addition, there are two programmed music fountains, four tall light poles, and landscaped green belts surrounding the area.

When the first phase of the project was completed, it coincided with the National Day holiday. The municipal government and Lianzhou Town government organized several evening performances at the cultural square. At that time, the square was crowded with visitors, creating a spectacular scene. Brilliant lights reflected off the hanging colorful balloons, and songs echoed around the colorful music fountains, making the entire square come alive. Such joyful scenes had not been seen in this small mountain town for many years. Every day, many people come to the cultural square for morning exercise, fitness, strolls, and leisure. The people of Lianzhou feel proud and gratified about this, and visitors from other places, upon arriving in Lianzhou, also exclaim: “I never expected such a beautiful square in a small mountain town!”

The second phase of the cultural square project began in early 2001, expanding the square eastward by 80,000 square meters. It will include the construction of cultural facilities such as a Mass Art Center, Library, and Science and Technology Museum. At that time, centered around Renmin Road in the city center, the cultural square and the Martyrs' Cemetery will be integrated to form a modern cultural activity hub densely populated with tourist attractions, attracting both local citizens and visitors from elsewhere.
