Fengyang Ancient Road

Fengyang Ancient Road is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Guangdong Province.

Fengyang Ancient Road is located in the northwest of Fengyang Village, Fengyang Town, Lianzhou City, Qingyuan. Adjacent to the provinces of Guangxi and Hunan, it has since ancient times been one of the most important trade routes along the borders of these three provinces. It also forms a significant part of the Zhao-Lei Ancient Post Road cultural route, which is one of the six routes of the South Yue Ancient Post Road.

Fengyang Ancient Road was a vital transportation route during the Ming and Qing periods, used by people traveling overland from Lianzhou to Lanshan County, Ningyuan County, and Yongzhou in Hunan Province. The ancient road extends northward into northern Guangxi. The surviving sections today stretch approximately 6 kilometers and are situated to the east of Sanjiangkou Natural Village, Zuoli Village Committee, Sanshui Yao Ethnic Township, Lianzhou City, Qingyuan, Guangdong Province. Most parts of the ancient road’s surface were paved with cobblestones, measuring 1.2 to 1.5 meters in width. Along the route, facilities such as rest shelters and stone bridges still remain.

By the Ming and Qing periods, with the development of the Lingnan region, trade between Guangdong and other provinces became increasingly prosperous. As a result, Fengyang Ancient Road became an important passage connecting South Yue with southern Hunan and northern Guangxi. A vast array of agricultural and sideline products, as well as daily and industrial goods, were transported along the post road, carried entirely on foot by porters. They came and went in an endless stream, and at the height of its activity, up to a thousand porters traveled the route each day.
